Setup

You will need the following:

- A Linux system connected to the Internet - Ubuntu preferred, but others will do - with the SSH server
- On your router forward some weird port (e.g. 8123) to port 22 on your Linux system. You will need to know the IP of the Linux system. You can find it out using ifconfig command.
- figure out your public IP - you can just enter What is my ip? Into Google.

Once you get this far I can finish the setup remotely and you can get started on the job. If you run into trouble at any point, give me a call.

My machine is too slow to handle another VM.

Do you have an old x86 desktop or laptop?

No.

Would their be a way we could manage this without a VM?

Our options are:

- VM
- dedicated system (e.g. find an old PC somewhere, hardware requirements are very minimal - we just need an Ethernet port and maybe 400 MHz CPU with 64MB RAM and 10G disk, could even do with less)
- some external host (e.g. Linode or Amazon EC2)
- dual-boot
